Omarchy Themes and Safe Desktop Customization

An Omarchy theme is usually more than a wallpaper. It can coordinate terminal colors, window borders, shell UI, and application styling. Start with the system theme path and assess readability across the set before adding a third-party theme or manual override.

Before switching

Record the current theme and close applications with unsaved work. A theme change is not normally a disk-level risk, but application reloads and configuration conflicts can still affect active work.

Use the menu or official command available in your installed version. Then check:

• light and dark text contrast;
• distinct terminal errors, warnings, and selections;
• synchronization across browser, editor, and launcher;
• comfort on HiDPI, external displays, and low brightness;
• a clear focused-window indicator.

Third-party theme risk

A community theme can include scripts, symlinks, or configuration replacement. Obtain it from a reviewable source, inspect the file list and install steps, and do not run an unexplained curl | sh. A public repository still needs a maintained version range and a license.

Customize without losing maintainability

Change one variable at a time—wallpaper, font, or accent—and keep a short record. Prefer Omarchy's user override path. Directly editing an update-managed file can lead to overwrite or merge conflicts later.

After customization, log out and back in at least once to prove it is not temporary process state. If UI breaks, return to a known-good theme before deciding whether the cause is theme data, cache, or one application.

Accessibility before uniformity

Do not sacrifice readable code, links, and state indicators for screenshot-perfect consistency. Text contrast, focus states, keyboard navigation, and reduced motion take priority. Advertising must also remain visually distinct from navigation and editorial content.
